Keep your tablet's Android version and security patch current
Android tablets receive periodic OS upgrades and monthly-ish security patches that fix vulnerabilities, improve battery behavior, and add new multitasking or One UI features.
What you should know
- Found under Settings > Software update (One UI) or Settings > System > System update on stock Android.
- Tap Download and install to check for and apply a pending update; tablets typically need at least 50% battery or to be plugged in.
- Security patch level and Android version are listed on the same screen under About tablet > Software information.
- Larger tablets often lag behind phones by a few weeks for the same OS version, since updates are staged per device model.
Keep the tablet connected to Wi-Fi and plugged in during installation — interrupting a system update partway through can leave the device stuck in a boot loop.
Why it matters
Security patches close vulnerabilities that can be exploited over Wi-Fi or through malicious apps, and many app updates eventually require a minimum Android version — falling behind can silently break app compatibility.
Best practices
- Turn on automatic system updates in Settings > Software update > Download updates automatically so patches install overnight.
- Back up important data before a major Android version upgrade (not just monthly patches), since a full version jump changes more system behavior.
- Check available storage before updating — large OS upgrades can need several gigabytes of free space to download and stage.
Common problems and fixes
- Update download stalls or fails repeatedly
- Switch to a different Wi-Fi network, clear the cache for the Software Update / Google Play services app under Settings > Apps, then retry.
- "Not enough storage" message when checking for updates
- Free up space under Settings > Battery and device care > Storage (or Settings > Storage) by removing downloaded files, offline video, or unused apps.
Tips and tricks
- Updates queued overnight while charging on Wi-Fi install automatically on most tablets if "Auto restart at scheduled time" is enabled in the same Software update menu.
Frequently asked questions
Will updating erase my apps and files?
No, a normal system update preserves your apps and data — only a factory reset removes them.
Related settings
- Storage ManagementStorage settings break down space used by apps, media, and system files, and include a Smart/Storage cleanup tool that identifies unused files, duplicate images, and large downloads.
- Wi-Fi & Network ConnectionMost tablets are Wi-Fi only (some cellular models add a SIM), so a stable Wi-Fi connection is essential for downloads, cloud sync, streaming, and app updates.
