Buying guide

How to get a real deal on smartphones

Smartphones headline almost every Indian sale, and the listed discount is often the smallest part of the deal. The real price usually comes from a mix of instant bank-card discounts, exchange value for your old phone and no-cost EMI, each with its own conditions.

Before a sale, settle on a budget and two or three models you would be happy with, then watch their prices for a few weeks. Compare the effective price after only the offers you can actually use, not the struck-through MRP. And check the variant: one model name can cover different RAM, storage or even chipsets, and the cheapest listing is often the smallest one.

What counts as a good discount

A rule of thumb: for a phone launched in the last year, a total saving of 10–20% including bank offers you can use is good; older models go lower, so check a successor hasn't just launched.

Best time to buy

The festive sales (usually late September to October) bring the widest phone offers, with the Republic Day and Independence Day sales close behind; a new launch often pushes the older model down too. See the sale calendar

Before you buy

  • Compare the exact variant: RAM, storage and chipset
  • Work out the price after only the bank offers you can use
  • Check how many years of Android and security updates the brand promises
  • Get an exchange quote based on your phone's real condition
  • See whether a newer model is about to launch
  • Buy from the brand store or a seller that gives brand warranty

Watch out for

  • Bank offers that need a minimum spend or only apply on EMI
  • Exchange quotes that drop after the pickup inspection
  • Refurbished or imported units that aren't clearly labelled
  • Bundles that inflate the value of a “free” accessory

Smartphones deals: common questions

Is no-cost EMI really free?

Often the discount equals the interest, so you pay about the same total, but some banks add a processing fee and GST on the interest part. Check the final amount on the payment page, and note that choosing EMI can rule out an instant discount.

Should I wait for the festive sale to buy a phone?

If you can wait, the festive season usually has the broadest offers. But many phones also get a price cut when a successor launches, so watching your specific model matters more than the calendar.

How do I know I'm getting the latest variant?

Compare the model number and chipset on the listing with the brand's own website. Older variants sometimes stay listed under a newer-sounding name.

Is exchanging my old phone worth it?

It is convenient, but compare the exchange value with what a resale platform or a private buyer would pay. The final value is fixed at pickup, after a condition check.
