Buying guide

How to get a real deal on beauty

Beauty and personal care deals are frequent, but this is the category where buying from the right seller matters most. Skincare, makeup and fragrances can be counterfeit or close to expiry, and a deep discount from an unknown seller is a reason for caution, not excitement.

Buy from the brand's official store, listings sold by authorised sellers, or beauty specialists such as Nykaa. Check the manufacturing or expiry date where it is shown, and compare price per millilitre or gram rather than pack price, since sizes vary a lot. Patch-test new skincare, and treat bold claims on a listing as marketing until reviews from people with similar skin back them up.

What counts as a good discount

A rule of thumb: 20–40% off from an authorised seller is a good beauty deal; much more than that from an unknown seller is a warning sign.

Best time to buy

Beauty brands usually discount most in the festive sales (late September to October), Nykaa's Pink Friday sale and Black Friday offers in late November. See the sale calendar

Before you buy

  • Buy from the brand store or an authorised seller
  • Compare price per ml or gram, not pack price
  • Check the expiry or manufacturing date
  • Scan the ingredients for anything you react to
  • Patch-test new skincare before regular use
  • Check whether the item can be returned once opened

Watch out for

  • Counterfeit products from unknown sellers
  • Near-expiry stock sold at deep discounts
  • Combo packs that price travel sizes like full sizes
  • Listings that make medical claims

Beauty & Personal Care deals: common questions

How can I avoid fake beauty products online?

Buy from the brand's official store, authorised sellers or specialist retailers. Check the packaging, batch code and seller name, and be wary of prices far below the usual.

Can I return skincare or makeup once opened?

Usually not, for hygiene reasons. Some stores accept unopened items or wrong deliveries. Check the policy on the product page before you buy.

Is a bigger pack always better value?

Often, but not always. Compare price per millilitre or gram, and think about whether you will finish it before it expires once opened.
