Buying guide

How to get a real deal on laptops

A laptop is a multi-year purchase, so a good deal is one that fits how you will use it, not just one with a big percentage. Listings under the same model name can differ in processor generation, RAM, storage and display, and those differences matter far more than a few extra per cent off.

In India, laptop offers tend to follow the academic year and the festive season, and student programmes and bank discounts can stack. Shortlist two or three configurations, compare them on the brand's own site, then check the price after offers you can use. Read the warranty terms too: some deals include on-site service, others carry-in only.

What counts as a good discount

As a rule of thumb, 10–20% under the usual selling price is a real deal on a current-generation laptop; bigger cuts usually mean an older processor or clearance stock.

Best time to buy

Back-to-college offers (usually June to August) and the festive sales (usually late September to October) are when laptop prices and bank offers tend to be best. See the sale calendar

Before you buy

  • Check the processor generation, not just “i5” or “Ryzen 5”
  • Prefer 16 GB RAM, or 8 GB that can be upgraded later
  • Make sure it has an SSD, and check its size
  • Check display brightness and resolution for how you work
  • Compare warranty: on-site or carry-in, and accidental damage cover
  • Confirm weight and battery life if you carry it daily

Watch out for

  • Older-generation chips sold as new at a “discount”
  • RAM soldered to the board that can't be upgraded
  • Bundled software or trial licences counted as savings
  • Refurbished or open-box units without clear labelling

Laptops deals: common questions

How much RAM does a laptop need?

For study, office work and browsing, 8 GB works, but 16 GB keeps a laptop comfortable for longer. For editing, heavy development tools or gaming, aim for 16 GB or more.

Are student laptop offers worth checking?

Yes. Several brands run education stores or back-to-college offers that can beat marketplace prices, sometimes with extra warranty. Compare them with the marketplace price after bank offers.

Is an older-generation laptop on sale a good buy?

It can be, if the price is much lower and the chip still suits your work. Check how long the model will keep getting driver and security updates, and compare with the current model's price.
