Subject line and preheader preview

Most people decide whether to open from the sender, subject and the first line of preview text. Phones show far fewer characters than desktop inboxes, so the words that matter should come first. This preview approximates how much fits on each.

Green fits most phones (about 38 characters), amber fits desktop (about 70), red is cut almost everywhere. Budgets are typical, not exact.

How to use the subject line & preheader preview

  1. 1Type the sender name. Use the From name recipients will recognise.
  2. 2Type the subject. Write the subject and watch the character count and truncation.
  3. 3Add a preheader. Write preview text that adds to the subject instead of repeating it.
  4. 4Compare views. Check the phone and desktop previews and move key words to the front.

Questions

How long should a subject line be?

Short enough that the key words survive on a phone. Around 30 to 50 characters is a common target, but clarity matters more than an exact count.

Are the cut-off points exact?

No. Every inbox, font and screen differs. The preview uses typical character budgets to show where text is likely to be cut, not a pixel-perfect render.

What is a preheader?

The short preview text inboxes show after the subject. If you do not set one, inboxes pull the first text of the email, which is often a navigation link or 'View in browser'.

The email deliverability metrics worth tracking

The deliverability metrics that matter most are bounce rate, spam complaint rate, inbox placement, authentication pass rate and genuine engagement such as replies and clicks. Delivery rate alone only tells you that a server accepted the message, not whether it reached the inbox. Tracking these together shows how mailbox providers see your sending.

Why your emails go to spam, and the honest fixes

Emails usually go to spam because the receiving provider does not trust the sender enough: authentication is missing or misaligned, the list includes people who did not ask for the mail, recipients complain or ignore it, or the domain is new and sending too much too fast. The durable fix is to address those causes directly, not to disguise the mail.
