How to Save on Online Fashion
Shopping for clothes online can save money, but returns, poor fit and extra fees can quickly undo a bargain. A little preparation on sizing and policies goes a long way, whether you shop in India, the US, the UK or elsewhere.

Measure yourself once
Keep a note of your chest, waist, hips and inside leg, and compare them with each brand's size chart. Sizes differ between brands and regions, so do not rely on your usual label.
- 2
Read the returns policy first
Check the return window, whether returns are free or charged, and whether you get a refund or store credit. Some items, such as innerwear or sale items, may not be returnable.
- 3
Use reviews for fit
Reviews often mention whether an item runs small or large, and photos from buyers can show the real colour and fabric. Check the fabric composition in the description too.
- 4
Time your purchases
Many retailers run seasonal and festive sales, such as end-of-season sales and major shopping events in different countries. Signing up for a retailer's newsletter or app can alert you, but unsubscribe if it tempts you to overspend.
- 5
Watch delivery, duties and payment fees
Low-cost items can attract delivery charges, and international orders may add import duties or taxes. Some sites also charge for cash on delivery; compare the full checkout total.
- 6
Buy fewer, better pieces
Cost per wear is a useful way to think about value. A well-made basic you wear often can be better value than several cheap items you rarely use.
Common mistakes
- Ordering your usual size without checking the chart.
- Buying final-sale items you might need to return.
- Missing the return window.
- Ignoring import duties on international orders.
