How to Buy a Mattress Online
Buying a mattress online saves a trip to the showroom, but you cannot lie on it first. Knowing which type and firmness suits you, and exactly how the trial and returns work, takes most of the risk out of it.

Know how you sleep
Side sleepers often prefer something softer for shoulder and hip pressure, while back and stomach sleepers often prefer firmer support. Body weight and any back or joint issues also matter.
- 2
Choose a mattress type
Common types include memory foam, other foams, pocket or innerspring coils, latex and hybrids that combine coils with foam. Each feels different in support, bounce and heat retention.
- 3
Treat firmness ratings as a guide
Firmness scales are not standard between brands, so a medium from one may feel firmer than another. Read descriptions and reviews from people with a similar build and sleep position.
- 4
Read the trial and return terms
Many online sellers offer home trials, but conditions vary. Check the length, any minimum period before returning, collection costs and whether you need to keep the packaging.
- 5
Check the warranty
A warranty usually covers defects such as sagging beyond a certain depth, not changes in comfort. Note what voids it, such as using an unsuitable base.
- 6
Plan delivery and setup
Boxed mattresses expand after unpacking and may need time to reach full shape, and some have a temporary smell. Check whether delivery includes carrying it in or removing your old mattress.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a firmness label means the same thing across brands.
- Returning too early, before your body adjusts; some trials require a minimum period.
- Ignoring the base, which can affect feel and warranty.
- Not checking how returns are collected and whether there is a fee.
