AltFTool vs TinyPNG

TinyPNG's compressor is very good, and its 5 MB free ceiling exists because they pay for every byte you send them. AltFTool re-encodes in the browser with the codecs your browser already ships, which removes the batch and size caps but also removes the thing TinyPNG is famous for: a decade of tuning on palette quantization. On a flat-colour PNG or a logo, TinyPNG will usually produce a smaller file at the same perceived quality. On a photo you just need under a size budget, the difference is often not worth the upload.

What TinyPNG does better

Plenty of people should keep paying for TinyPNG, and these are the reasons why.

• The compression engine is genuinely excellent — a decade of tuning on lossy palette quantization for PNG plus modern WebP/AVIF encoding usually beats a generic encoder preset at the same perceived quality.
• It is a real pipeline product, not just a web page: a documented API with 500 free compressions a month, official WordPress and Photoshop plugins, and an Image CDN, so compression can be automated inside a build or CMS instead of done by hand.
• Because compression runs on their servers, a 150 MB image or a large batch processes at full speed on any device — a low-powered laptop or phone never becomes the bottleneck.

And what AltFTool does not do

• Our compression is a browser re-encode, not Tinify's tuned quantizer. On PNGs with flat colour, expect them to win on size at equal quality.
• No API, no WordPress plugin, no Photoshop plugin and no image CDN — nothing here fits into a build pipeline.
• Very large images are bounded by browser memory. TinyPNG's paid tiers take 75–150 MB files without blinking.

Questions people actually ask

Does AltFTool compress as well as TinyPNG?

Usually close on photographs, usually not on flat-colour PNGs and logos, where Tinify's palette quantizer is genuinely better. If a few kilobytes matter on an icon set, use TinyPNG.

Is there a batch limit?

No fixed one. TinyPNG caps free batches at 20 images because each is uploaded and processed on their side; here the constraint is how many your browser can hold in memory at once.

Can I automate AltFTool compression in a build?
