AltFTool vs Smallpdf

The friction most people hit on Smallpdf's free plan is the unpublished daily download limit — you find out you have used it up at the moment you needed one more file. AltFTool has no counter because there is no server doing the work. The flip side is equally real: Smallpdf is ISO/IEC 27001 certified with a signed DPA and a bundled Sign.com account, and if your employer's procurement team needs an audited vendor, a free browser tool is not an answer to that question.

• Mobile app access and the mobile Scan tool carry a daily task limit on Free
• Files are uploaded and processed on servers (Smallpdf names Hetzner, in the EU, as the provider that processes user-uploaded files)
• By Smallpdf's own privacy notice, documents processed with the service are by default "accessible to anyone with a unique sharable URL" unless the user disables that

What Smallpdf does better

Plenty of people should keep paying for Smallpdf, and these are the reasons why.

• ISO/IEC 27001 certified and GDPR, CCPA and nFADP compliant, with a published Data Processing Agreement — the kind of audited paper trail a company legally needs before it can approve a document vendor.
• The subscription bundles full Sign.com Premium, giving genuine e-signature workflow: signature requests, templates, signer IDs, activity timeline and a Certificate of Completion. That is a legal instrument a client-side tool cannot produce.
• A mature server-side pipeline delivers strong compression and OCR quality on difficult scanned documents, backed by native mobile apps, a Windows app and a document scanner.
• Operating since 2013 at large scale with responsive human support and a well-earned reputation for a clean, forgiving interface.

And what AltFTool does not do

• No e-signature workflow. We cannot issue a signature request, a signer ID or a Certificate of Completion — Smallpdf's bundled Sign.com can, and that is a legal artefact, not a nice-to-have.
• No compliance paperwork. There is no DPA to sign, no ISO certificate, and no SOC report, so we will fail a procurement review that requires one.
• No OCR and no text editing inside an existing PDF. Annotation and page surgery, yes; rewriting a paragraph in place, no.

Questions people actually ask

What replaces Smallpdf's Strong Compression?

Nothing exactly. Our compressor re-encodes images and strips redundant objects in the browser, which handles most oversized documents, but Smallpdf's Pro-only strong mode will win on heavy scanned files.

Does AltFTool create a shareable link to my document?

No, and that is deliberate. Smallpdf's privacy notice says processed documents are by default reachable by anyone holding the unique URL unless you turn that off. We have no URL to hand out because we never receive the file.

Can I sign a contract with AltFTool?

You can draw or place a signature image on a page with the annotation tool, but that is a picture, not an audited e-signature. For anything a counterparty may dispute, use Sign.com through Smallpdf or a comparable provider.
