Ranked on what they unlocked, not how famous the name is
Explanatory power and reproducibility carry more weight here than fame, which is why several household names sit lower than specialists would expect and a handful of less-celebrated results sit higher. Every entry is judged on what it made possible afterward — the instruments, treatments and technologies that depended on it existing first. Where credit for a discovery is genuinely disputed, the entry says so directly rather than smoothing the history into one tidy name. Superseded or later-revised aspects of a theory are noted rather than quietly dropped from the record.

Newton unified the fall of an apple and the orbit of the Moon under the same three laws and one equation, and those laws still steer every rocket launch and bridge design today. Relativity and quantum mechanics later revealed where the model breaks down, but at everyday scales it has never needed correcting.

NASA still uses Newtonian mechanics, not general relativity, for the overwhelming majority of spacecraft trajectory calculations — it is simply accurate enough.

Einstein replaced Newton’s gravity-as-a-force with gravity as the curvature of spacetime itself, a conceptual leap so severe that only a handful of physicists initially followed the mathematics. The 1919 solar eclipse expedition that confirmed starlight bending around the Sun turned Einstein into the first global science celebrity.
Watson, Crick, Franklin & Wilkins · 1953
Watson and Crick built the correct structure using Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray diffraction data — including her Photograph 51 — shown to them without her knowledge, a credit dispute historians and scientists still argue over. Franklin died in 1958, four years before Watson, Crick and Wilkins received the Nobel Prize, which is never awarded posthumously.
Franklin’s unpublished data was shown to Watson and Crick without her consent — an episode now widely taught as a cautionary case study in scientific credit.
Planck, Bohr, Heisenberg & Schrödinger · 1900–1926
No single person discovered quantum mechanics — it emerged in pieces over a generation as physicists tried to explain why classical physics failed at atomic scales. The theory works with extraordinary precision, and nobody has ever fully agreed on what it implies about reality, a tension Einstein himself never accepted.
Edward Jenner · 1796
Jenner tested his cowpox hypothesis on an eight-year-old boy, a study that would never clear an ethics board today, then spent years fighting professional scepticism before the method was accepted. Smallpox, which had killed an estimated 300 million people in the twentieth century alone before vaccination, was declared eradicated in 1980.
Dmitri Mendeleev · 1869
Mendeleev left deliberate gaps in his table and predicted the properties of undiscovered elements to fill them — when gallium and germanium turned up years later matching his predictions almost exactly, scepticism about the whole scheme evaporated. A genuinely rare case of a classification system making testable predictions.
James Clerk Maxwell · 1861–1865
Maxwell folded electricity, magnetism and light into four equations and, almost as an aside, calculated that his theoretical waves should travel at the speed of light — correctly inferring that light itself is an electromagnetic wave. Einstein reportedly kept a photograph of Maxwell on his study wall.
Alexander Fleming · 1928
Fleming noticed a stray mould had killed the bacteria around it on a contaminated petri dish he had nearly discarded — the discovery sat largely unexploited for over a decade until Florey and Chain’s wartime team worked out how to mass-produce it. It reached soldiers in time for D-Day.
Nicolaus Copernicus · De revolutionibus, 1543
Copernicus withheld publication until he was dying, aware of how radical it was to move the Earth out of the centre of creation. Galileo’s telescope observations and Kepler’s corrected elliptical orbits later turned the hypothesis into an evidenced, workable model.
Otto Hahn, Lise Meitner & Fritz Strassmann · 1938
Hahn ran the experiment in Berlin and mailed the puzzling results to Meitner, who had fled Nazi Germany for Sweden; she and her nephew Otto Frisch worked out the physics of the split nucleus by phone and letter. Hahn alone received the 1944 Nobel Prize, an omission historians widely regard as one of the field’s clearest credit failures.
