Research output and undergraduate teaching quality rarely move together, and this ranking refuses to average them into a single mushy number without saying which is driving a given placement. Institutions are judged on what they produce — publications that get cited, graduates who get hired, funding that gets renewed — rather than on how old their crest is. Endowment size is recorded but is deliberately one of the smaller inputs, since a large endowment poorly deployed helps no student.
