Fleming noticed a stray mould had killed the bacteria around it on a contaminated petri dish he had nearly discarded — the discovery sat largely unexploited for over a decade until Florey and Chain’s wartime team worked out how to mass-produce it. Newton unified the fall of an apple and the orbit of the Moon under the same three laws and one equation, and those laws still steer every rocket launch and bridge design today. Relativity and quantum mechanics later revealed where the model breaks down, but at everyday scales it has never needed correcting.

Darwin spent two decades gathering evidence before publishing, reportedly spurred into print when Alfred Russel Wallace independently reached the same conclusion. A single mechanism — variation, inheritance, differential survival — explained the diversity of life without requiring a designer, which is exactly why it remains contested outside science even as it stays unchallenged within it.
Louis Pasteur & Robert Koch · 1860s–1880s
Before germ theory, disease was widely blamed on “bad air” or imbalanced bodily humours, and hospitals killed patients through practices doctors considered perfectly sound. Pasteur’s fermentation work and Koch’s postulates for linking a specific microbe to a specific disease together turned medicine into something closer to an actual science.
Albert Einstein · 1915
Einstein replaced Newton’s gravity-as-a-force with gravity as the curvature of spacetime itself, a conceptual leap so severe that only a handful of physicists initially followed the mathematics. The 1919 solar eclipse expedition that confirmed starlight bending around the Sun turned Einstein into the first global science celebrity.
Watson, Crick, Franklin & Wilkins · 1953
Watson and Crick built the correct structure using Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray diffraction data — including her Photograph 51 — shown to them without her knowledge, a credit dispute historians and scientists still argue over. Franklin died in 1958, four years before Watson, Crick and Wilkins received the Nobel Prize, which is never awarded posthumously.

No single person discovered quantum mechanics — it emerged in pieces over a generation as physicists tried to explain why classical physics failed at atomic scales. The theory works with extraordinary precision, and nobody has ever fully agreed on what it implies about reality, a tension Einstein himself never accepted.
Edward Jenner · 1796
Jenner tested his cowpox hypothesis on an eight-year-old boy, a study that would never clear an ethics board today, then spent years fighting professional scepticism before the method was accepted. Smallpox, which had killed an estimated 300 million people in the twentieth century alone before vaccination, was declared eradicated in 1980.
Dmitri Mendeleev · 1869
Mendeleev left deliberate gaps in his table and predicted the properties of undiscovered elements to fill them — when gallium and germanium turned up years later matching his predictions almost exactly, scepticism about the whole scheme evaporated. A genuinely rare case of a classification system making testable predictions.
