About this tool
Estimate calories burned playing indoor or beach volleyball from body weight, sets played and time between sets.
The Volleyball Calorie Burn Calculator estimates the energy cost of a match from your body weight, the number of sets, their average length and the time spent between them, using the MET equation kcal/min = MET x 3.5 x kg / 200. All three settings are published Compendium of Physical Activities values: beach volleyball in sand at 8.0 METs, competitive indoor play at 6.0 and casual six-a-side at 3.0. It is aimed at club, beach and social players who want a per-set figure rather than one blanket number for the sport.

Beach play uses the 8.0 MET sand value, not the indoor figure.
Splits the match into calories per set so any score line can be scaled.
Breaks are priced at 1.3 METs instead of being ignored or overcounted.
About 570 kcal an hour of beach volleyball for a 68 kg player, roughly 430 kcal for competitive indoor play and about 210 kcal for a casual six-a-side game. Those follow directly from the Compendium values of 8.0, 6.0 and 3.0 METs.
Sand absorbs energy from every step and jump, and a beach team is two players covering a court that six players share indoors. The Compendium rates sand play at 8.0 METs against 6.0 for competitive indoor volleyball — about a third more per minute.
A set to 25 points usually runs about 20 to 25 minutes at competitive level, with a deciding set to 15 points nearer 12 to 15 minutes. Enter your own average rather than assuming, since rally length varies widely by standard.
Competitive indoor and beach volleyball are vigorous-intensity activities, so a couple of matches a week can cover the WHO guideline of 75 to 150 vigorous minutes. Casual six-a-side at 3.0 METs is only moderate intensity and would need more time to count the same. This is informational only — check with a doctor before starting a new programme.
