About this tool
Plan USA outfits by region and month: courthouse and nightclub door rules, park layering, sun kit and a weighed packing list.
This planner builds a US packing list from the region you are visiting, the month, and the specific places with posted dress rules. The United States has almost no clothing law, so what actually catches travellers out is local: courthouse security turning away shorts and hats, Las Vegas club doors refusing athletic wear and trainers, a handful of dining rooms still asking men for a jacket, and six regional climates that share nothing but a calendar. Climate figures come from NOAA 1991–2020 normals for a representative station in each region.

Six NOAA stations instead of one national average, because Miami in January and Chicago in January are different trips.
Courthouse, club-door and jacket-required policies listed separately from comfort advice.
Quantities follow your laundry interval plus a drying day, with an estimated weight for the carry-on.
Most post one at security: no shorts, no tank tops, no hats indoors and no clothing with slogans, and judges can exclude people who ignore it. Long trousers, a collared shirt and closed shoes clear every courthouse in the country. Federal buildings add screening, which moves faster if you are not wearing a lot of metal.
Door policies are the strictest dress rule most visitors meet in the US: no athletic wear, no sports jerseys, no shorts or sandals for men, usually no hats, and dress shoes rather than trainers. Policies are set by each venue and enforced at the door, so check the club's own page before the night rather than the hotel's.
Synthetic or merino layers rather than cotton, plus a brimmed hat and boots already broken in. Cotton holds sweat and stops insulating once wet, which is the mechanism behind most hypothermia cases in mild weather. Elevation matters more than season — the Grand Canyon rim can sit around 20°C colder than the river on the same afternoon.
Enough to change the entire packing list. In January, Miami normals run about 25.6°C by day while Chicago sits near 0.6°C by day and -7.6°C overnight. In July, Phoenix averages about 41.4°C while coastal San Francisco averages 19.5°C. Choose the region before anything else.
