About this tool
Check a school bag against the 10% of body weight rule and the class-wise weight limits in India's School Bag Policy 2020.
The School Bag Weight Checker compares a loaded school bag against two published rules at once: the 10% of body weight ceiling stated in India's School Bag Policy 2020 and echoed by occupational therapy guidance, and the policy's class-wise kilogram limits, which run from 1.6-2.2 kg for Class I-II up to 3.5-5.0 kg for Class XI-XII. It reports the stricter of the two as the binding limit and, when the bag is over, converts the excess into how many textbooks, notebooks or water bottles would need to come out.

No more than 10% of the child's body weight. For a 30 kg child that is 3 kg including books, water bottle, lunch box and any device. India's School Bag Policy 2020 also sets absolute class-wise limits, so a bag can breach the policy even when it is under 10%.
The School Bag Policy 2020 sets 1.6-2.2 kg for Class I-II, 1.7-2.5 kg for Class III-V, 2-3 kg for Class VI-VII, 2.5-4 kg for Class VIII, 2.5-4.5 kg for Class IX-X and 3.5-5 kg for Class XI-XII. Pre-primary children are not expected to carry a school bag at all.
Heavy or badly worn bags are associated with reported back, neck and shoulder pain in schoolchildren, and the risk rises with the load as a share of body weight and with carrying the bag on one shoulder. Persistent pain in a child should be assessed by a doctor or physiotherapist rather than blamed on the bag alone.
Both shoulder straps, tightened so the bag sits against the upper back and does not hang below the hips, with the heaviest items packed closest to the spine. A waist or chest strap transfers some load off the shoulders, and a bag on one shoulder concentrates the whole weight on one side.
