About this tool
Calories burned social dancing or rehearsing salsa, counted song by song so time spent sitting out is priced separately.
The Salsa Dance Calorie Calculator works out the energy cost of a class or social by counting the songs you actually danced rather than the hours you were in the room. Dancing minutes are priced at the Compendium of Physical Activities MET value for your style — 3.0 for slow bachata up to 7.8 for fast performance work — and the remaining time at 1.6 MET for standing and talking, using kcal/min = MET x 3.5 x kg / 200.

Off-the-floor time is priced separately so the total is not inflated two or three times over.
Bachata, class drills, social on1/on2, rueda and performance work each use their own MET value.
Shows what a single track is worth, which is easier to sanity-check than a session total.
About 393 kcal for a 68 kg adult dancing continuously at social club tempo (5.5 MET), rising to roughly 500 kcal for fast rueda at 7.0 MET and 557 kcal for performance-level work at 7.8 MET. Continuous is the key word — a typical social night includes far more standing than dancing.
Most salsa tracks run 4 to 6 minutes, noticeably longer than the roughly 3-minute pop average, and DJs often mix two together. Using 4.5 minutes as the average song length is a reasonable default for a social.
Fast salsa does — anything at or above 6 MET is vigorous intensity, so rueda and performance rehearsal count toward the 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week in the WHO guidelines. Social salsa at 5.5 MET and beginner classes at 4.5 MET fall in the moderate band and count toward the 150-minute moderate target.
Most calculators multiply your whole night by a dance MET value, which assumes you never left the floor. Counting songs separately typically halves the figure for a social, and that lower number is the realistic one.
