About this tool
Estimate calories burned mopping floors from your body weight and either the minutes spent or the floor area covered.
The Mopping Calorie Burn Calculator estimates the energy cost of mopping floors from your body weight and either the minutes you spent or the floor area you covered, using the MET equation kcal/min = MET x 3.5 x kg / 200. Mopping while standing at moderate effort is rated at 3.5 METs in the Compendium of Physical Activities, with lighter wipe-overs at 2.3 and heavy scrubbing at 4.3. Area mode converts square metres into minutes using cleaning-industry damp-mopping production rates of roughly 4,000 sq ft per hour in open space and 2,000 in furnished rooms.
Open Mopping Calorie Burn Calculator on AltFTool — it loads instantly in your browser.
Press 'I know the minutes' or 'I know the floor area', then enter Body weight and choose kg or lb.
Under 'How hard were you working?' pick Light - quick wipe over a small area (2.3 MET), Moderate - standard mopping, standing (3.5 MET) or Vigorous (4.3 MET), then enter 'Minutes spent mopping', or 'Floor area mopped' with a Floor layout of 'Open floor, very little furniture' or 'Furnished rooms with obstacles'.
Read Calories burned with 'Net of resting metabolism', Burn rate in kcal/min, 'Per hour of mopping' and 'Calories per square metre', plus the Compendium MET source; Copy result copies the figures.
Enter minutes if you timed it, or floor area if you only know the size of the room.
A light wipe-over, standard standing mopping and heavy scrubbing are priced separately.
Subtracts the calories you would have burned resting, so the extra cost is clear.
About 220 kcal an hour for a 60 kg person at the Compendium's 3.5 MET value for mopping while standing, or roughly 110 kcal for a typical 30-minute session. A 90 kg person burns about 330 kcal an hour for the same work.
Yes. At 3.5 METs mopping sits in the 3.0 to 5.9 MET moderate-intensity band, the same band as brisk walking, so it can count towards the WHO guideline of 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week.
Cleaning-industry planning rates put damp mopping at about 4,000 sq ft (370 m²) an hour in open floor space and around 2,000 sq ft (185 m²) an hour in furnished rooms, so a typical 80 m² home takes roughly 25 minutes of actual mopping.
On its own, rarely. Half an hour of mopping is roughly 110 kcal for a 60 kg person, so weight change still depends on total energy balance across the week rather than any single chore. This is informational only — talk to a doctor or dietitian about a weight-loss plan.
