About this tool
Military Time Converter
Convert 12-hour AM/PM time to 24-hour military time and back from inputs like 7:30 pm or 1930, with pronunciation, zone letters and a full chart.
The Military Time Converter reads whatever you type and converts it in the other direction. Enter a 12-hour time such as 7:30 pm, 7pm or 6:45 a.m. and you get military time (1930); enter a 24-hour time such as 1930, 0730, 19:30 hrs or 19h30 and you get standard AM/PM time. Each result also shows the 24-hour clock form, the military pronunciation (“nineteen thirty hours”) and the everyday spoken form. A trailing letter like Z marks a military time zone, and you can shift a time between zone letters. There is a live clock in local and Zulu time, a calculator for the hours between two times, and a full 24-hour chart. It runs in your browser.

- Working out hours on a night shift that crosses midnight, such as 2200 to 0600, in hours and decimal hours.
- Converting a Zulu (UTC) time in a briefing or message, such as 1400Z, to your local time or another zone letter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert regular time to military time?
For times from 1:00 AM to 12:59 PM, drop the colon and AM, adding a leading zero if needed: 7:30 AM becomes 0730 and 12:15 PM becomes 1215. For 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour: 7:30 PM becomes 1930. Midnight to 12:59 AM starts with 00, so 12:30 AM is 0030.
How do I convert military time to regular time?
If the hour is 01 to 11, it is AM: 0845 is 8:45 AM. If it is 12, it is PM: 1230 is 12:30 PM. If it is 13 to 23, subtract 12 and use PM: 1730 is 5:30 PM. If it is 00, it is the 12 AM hour: 0015 is 12:15 AM.
What time is 1900 in military time?
1900 is 7:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any hour above 12 to get the PM hour, so 19 − 12 = 7. It is spoken “nineteen hundred hours”. Likewise 1300 is 1:00 PM, 1500 is 3:00 PM and 2100 is 9:00 PM.
How do you say military time out loud?
Say the hours and then the minutes as two-digit numbers, followed by “hours”. Whole hours use “hundred”: 0800 is “zero eight hundred hours” and 1400 is “fourteen hundred hours”. Leading zeros are spoken: 0730 is “zero seven thirty”. Minutes under ten use “zero”: 1905 is “nineteen zero five hours”.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 its end, so 2400 on Monday is the same moment as 0000 on Tuesday. Most schedules use 0000, or 2359 to avoid confusion about which day is meant. This converter accepts 2400 and treats it as midnight at the end of the day.
Is military time the same as 24-hour time?
Nearly. Both count hours from 00 to 23. Military time is usually written as four digits without a colon (1930) and often followed by a time zone letter, while the 24-hour clock used in much of the world writes a colon (19:30). The time itself is identical.
What does Zulu time mean?
Zulu is the military and aviation name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the zero time zone, from the letter Z in the NATO phonetic alphabet. A time written 1400Z is 14:00 UTC. Using one reference zone avoids confusion when people in different time zones coordinate.
What are the military time zone letters?
Each whole-hour zone has a letter: Z (Zulu) is UTC, A to M (skipping J) are UTC+1 to +12 eastward, and N to Y are UTC−1 to −12 westward. For example, R (Romeo) is UTC−5, US Eastern Standard Time. J (Juliett) means the observer's local time. The full list is under the chart.
How do I calculate hours worked with military time?
Subtract the start time from the end time in minutes. 0800 to 1630 is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift crossed midnight, so add 24 hours: 2200 to 0600 is 8 hours. The duration panel does this for you.
Why is 12 PM noon and 12 AM midnight?
AM and PM stand for ante meridiem and post meridiem, before and after midday. The 12 o'clock hour right after noon is counted as PM, and the 12 o'clock hour after midnight as AM. In military time there is no ambiguity: noon is 1200 and midnight is 0000.
