About this tool
Estimate laminate planks, packs, underlay rolls and beading lengths for a room, with a wastage allowance.
This calculator sizes the three separate orders a laminate job needs: planks by the pack, underlay by the roll and beading by the length. Planks come from floor area divided by the area of one plank, multiplied by a wastage allowance and rounded up to whole packs; beading comes from the wall perimeter minus the doorways. It also states the expansion gap a floating floor needs — 10 mm around the perimeter, and 12 mm once the longest run passes about 8 metres.

Planks, underlay rolls and beading pieces sized together, not just square footage.
8% for a straight lay in a simple room up to 20% for herringbone.
Flags when the last row lands under 60 mm so you can trim the first row instead.
Allow about 8% for a straight lay in a simple rectangular room, 12% where the room is irregular or has several doorways, 15% for a diagonal lay and 20% for herringbone or chevron. The offcut from the end of each row can usually start the next one, which is why a plain room wastes so little.
Indian retail packs typically hold 7 to 10 planks and cover roughly 1.9 to 2.2 square metres, depending on plank size — a 1215 × 195 mm plank at 8 per pack covers about 1.90 sqm or 20.4 sq ft. Always buy in whole packs from the same batch so the decor and shade match.
Manufacturers specify at least 10 mm around the entire perimeter, rising to 12-15 mm on runs longer than about 8 metres, because laminate is a floating floor that expands and contracts with humidity. The gap is hidden by beading or skirting, which is fixed to the wall and never through the floor.
Yes, unless the planks come with underlay pre-attached. Underlay evens out minor subfloor irregularities, cushions the click joints and cuts impact noise; over a ground-floor or damp-prone slab you also need a moisture barrier, either a separate 200 micron polythene sheet or an underlay with the barrier built in.
