Mental shortcuts for the fixed NPR–INR peg of 1.60, including the exact five-eighths rule and its easier approximations.
Nepal's currency is pegged, not floating: Nepal Rastra Bank has held NPR 1.60 = INR 1 since 12 February 1993, which makes 1 Nepalese rupee worth exactly 0.625 Indian rupees, or five-eighths. This sheet derives the mental arithmetic for that constant — multiply by 5 and divide by 8 for the exact answer, or use a coarser whole-number rule and see how far it strays — and does the same for the reverse direction, where ₹1 buys NRs 1.60. It is for travellers, students and cross-border traders who convert the same pair every day.

Because the rate is pegged, the shortcut you memorise today still works next year unless the peg itself changes.
Five-eighths is the peg exactly, so the fraction rule has zero error — the sheet shows that alongside the rougher options.
It also derives the ₹ to NRs rule, which at the peg is simply adding 60%.
NPR 1.60 to INR 1, a peg Nepal Rastra Bank has maintained since 12 February 1993. So ₹1,000 is NRs 1,600, and NRs 1,000 is ₹625.
Multiply by 5 and divide by 8 — that is exactly the peg, with no rounding error. A NRs 450 dal bhat is 450 × 5 = 2,250, divided by 8 = ₹281. If you want something faster, multiply by 0.6 and add a little, which lands about 4% low.
Indian currency is widely handled in Nepal, but only in smaller denominations — the ₹500 note is not accepted, so carry ₹100 notes or exchange formally through a bank or licensed changer. Rules on carrying and using Indian currency across the border are set by the two central banks and do change, so check the current position before travelling.
It is a policy decision, so it can be revised, but the 1.60 rate has been stable since 1993 and is reviewed rather than floated. Because the peg is fixed against the Indian rupee, the Nepalese rupee moves against the dollar and every other currency exactly as the Indian rupee does.
