This checker tells you whether the United Arab Emirates expects an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence, and - more importantly - what happens to that arrangement when a residence visa is issued. Traffic law is federal, under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on Traffic Regulation, but licensing is run by each emirate through the RTA in Dubai, Abu Dhabi Police and their counterparts. A visitor may hire on a recognised foreign licence; a resident may not drive on one at all, whatever validity is left on it.

As a tourist, only if your licence is not on the list the UAE recognises on its own, or is not printed in English or Arabic. Holders of UK, Irish, US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and GCC licences can normally hire on the licence alone. A licence in German, Japanese, Korean or another script that a hire clerk cannot read is expected to come with an International Driving Permit as the translation, and rental companies enforce that even where the law is looser.
No. Once a UAE residence visa is issued, a foreign licence and an International Driving Permit both stop being accepted for driving, however much validity remains on them. A UAE driving licence becomes compulsory, and there is no grace period built into the rule - which is why it is worth starting the conversion or the driving course before the visa lands rather than after.

The recognised list includes the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Turkey, the other GCC states and most of the EU and EEA. Holders from those countries swap with an application, an eye test, the fee and an Emirates ID. Licences from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are not on the list, so those residents take the full course of lessons plus the theory and road tests. The list is expanded from time to time - check the current version with your emirate's licensing authority.

Any measurable alcohol while driving is an offence, and the consequences under the traffic law include imprisonment as well as a fine and licence suspension, so a licensed hotel bar is not a reason to treat the drive home as ordinary. The traffic law also runs a black-point system, and reaching 24 points inside twelve months costs the licence and usually the vehicle. This is general information rather than legal advice.
