About this tool
Answer eight questions to get your FINDRISC score out of 26 and the matching 10-year type 2 diabetes risk band.
The FINDRISC Diabetes Risk Score converts eight questions — age, BMI, waist circumference, physical activity, fruit and vegetable intake, blood pressure medication, any past high blood glucose reading and family history — into a score from 0 to 26 that maps to a 10-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It uses the point values published by Lindström and Tuomilehto in Diabetes Care (2003), the same instrument used in Finnish and wider European screening programmes. No blood test is involved, so it works as a first-pass check on whether a glucose or HbA1c test is worth asking for.

Uses the original FINDRISC scoring, including the sex-specific waist cut-offs of 94/102 cm for men and 80/88 cm for women.
A per-question table makes it obvious which single answer is driving the score, so you know what is worth changing.
Everything is answerable from a tape measure, a set of scales and your own history.
Under 7 is the lowest band, with roughly a 1 in 100 chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. Scores of 7-11 are slightly elevated (about 1 in 25), 12-14 moderate (about 1 in 6), 15-20 high (about 1 in 3) and over 20 very high (about 1 in 2).
A score of 12 or more is the usual prompt to arrange a fasting glucose, HbA1c or oral glucose tolerance test, because that is where estimated 10-year risk reaches roughly 1 in 6. Anyone who has already been told they had a high blood glucose reading should be tested regardless of the total.
Stand up, put the tape around your bare middle at navel level — below the lowest rib and above the hip bone — and read it at the end of a normal breath out without pulling the tape tight. Men score 0 under 94 cm, 3 from 94 to 102 cm and 4 above 102 cm; for women the cut-offs are 80 cm and 88 cm.
Yes. Waist circumference, BMI, physical activity and diet are all modifiable, and together they are worth up to 10 of the 26 points. Age, family history and a past high glucose reading cannot change. This is informational only — talk to a doctor or diabetes nurse before making major changes to diet, exercise or medication.
