About this tool
Map any date to the Indian financial year and assessment year, with the quarter and the statutory filing dates that follow.
The Indian financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March, and the assessment year is the twelve months beginning on the 1 April immediately after it — so income earned in FY 2024-25 is assessed in AY 2025-26. This finder maps any date to its financial year, assessment year and quarter, shows how far through the year that date sits, and lists the statutory dates that follow: the four advance tax instalments under section 211 and the return deadlines under section 139. The rule comes from section 3 of the Income-tax Act, 1961, which defines the previous year, and section 2(9), which defines the assessment year.

Financial year and assessment year together, so the ITR form year is never guessed.
Q1 to Q4 on the April-March calendar, with the day count through the year.
Advance tax instalments and every section 139 filing deadline for that year.
The financial year is when you earn the income, running 1 April to 31 March. The assessment year is the following twelve months, when that income is declared and assessed. Income earned between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025 falls in FY 2024-25 and is filed in AY 2025-26, so the assessment year is always one ahead.
January, February and March belong to the financial year that started the previous April. A payment dated 28 March 2025 falls in FY 2024-25, not FY 2025-26 — a distinction that matters for tax-saving investments under Chapter VI-A, which must be made on or before 31 March to count for that year.
Under section 139(1) the due date is 31 July of the assessment year for taxpayers whose accounts do not require audit, 31 October where a tax audit applies, and 30 November where a transfer-pricing report in Form 3CEB is required. A belated return under 139(4) or a revised return under 139(5) can be filed up to 31 December of the assessment year, and an updated return under 139(8A) within 48 months of the end of the assessment year. The CBDT extends these dates by circular in some years.
Q1 is April to June, Q2 July to September, Q3 October to December and Q4 January to March. Indian company results, TDS returns and GST reporting follow this April-March calendar rather than the January-December one, which is why an Indian Q3 result covers a different period from a US-calendar Q3.
