Hot weather, illness, pregnancy or nursing can push the need much higher, so add half again in summer conditions.
Three days for a bag you might carry out, two weeks for supplies kept at home. The split reflects what the two kits are for: outside help usually reaches people inside 72 hours, but power, water and roads can stay out far longer, which is the situation the home supply covers.
A manual can opener, spare batteries stored outside the devices, cash in small notes, and a written list of contacts. Each is cheap and each makes something else in the kit useless when absent — tinned food you cannot open, a torch you cannot power, a shop that cannot take cards, and phone numbers on a dead handset.
