Allow 60 cm of table edge per diner as a minimum and 70 cm for elbow room. That means a rectangular table seating three per side needs to be at least 180 cm long, which is why 180 × 90 cm is the classic six-seater.

About 115 cm diameter at the 60 cm minimum allowance, or 135 cm for a comfortable 70 cm each — the circumference (π × diameter) has to cover everyone's edge allowance. Past 150 cm diameter the centre of the table becomes out of reach for serving dishes.
