About this tool
Estimate a baby's first-year cost from delivery to childcare, with diaper counts, the immunisation schedule and a monthly saving plan.
This calculator estimates what a baby costs in its first twelve months by building the figure from quantities rather than a single guessed lump sum. Diapers are counted stage by stage as daily use falls from about nine a day in the newborn months to five by the end of the year — roughly 2,460 diapers in total — formula spend is scaled to whether feeding is exclusive, mixed or breast only, solids are counted from month six in line with WHO and MoHFW guidance, and immunisation uses the five routine contacts of India's National Immunisation Schedule. One-off costs are separated from running costs so you can see what has to be saved before the birth.

Diaper counts, formula tins and immunisation visits are multiplied out, so you can challenge any single assumption.
Delivery and gear must be saved for; diapers and childcare come out of monthly income. The tool keeps them apart.
Maternity reimbursement is subtracted from one-off costs and capped at what you actually spend.
Around 2,400 to 2,700 disposable diapers, assuming roughly nine a day in the first three months falling to about five a day by month twelve. At ₹12 a diaper that is close to ₹30,000 for the year, which is usually the single largest recurring line after childcare.
India's National Immunisation Schedule has five routine contacts in the first year — at birth, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks and 9 months — covering BCG, hepatitis B, OPV and IPV, pentavalent, rotavirus, PCV and measles-rubella. These vaccines are free at government facilities; private paediatric schedules add optional vaccines and consultation fees. Follow your paediatrician's schedule.
Maternity benefit is usually an add-on rather than part of a base health policy, and where it exists it normally carries a waiting period of two to four years and a separate sub-limit for normal versus caesarean delivery. Check your policy schedule for the waiting period and the sub-limit before assuming a claim will be paid.
As early as the pregnancy is confirmed, because the one-off block — delivery, pre-natal scans and gear — falls due within months while the running costs spread across the year. Splitting the target that way, as this tool does, keeps the monthly saving realistic instead of front-loading the whole year's cost.
