Optimize the interface for touch when used as a tablet

Windows 11 no longer has a separate on/off 'Tablet Mode' like Windows 10 — instead it automatically adjusts spacing, the taskbar, and window snapping when it detects the device is being used without a keyboard, and lets you fine-tune touch keyboard and gesture behavior.

What you should know

  • Go to Settings > System > Tablet (this page only appears on convertible/2-in-1 hardware) to control when Windows switches to a touch-friendly layout.
  • Toggle Change additional tablet settings > When I sign in options to choose whether Windows asks or automatically adapts when the keyboard is detached.
  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch keyboard to control when the on-screen keyboard appears and to enable Show touch keyboard when not in tablet posture.
  • Adjust Settings > System > Multitasking to configure how Snap layouts behave with touch and pen input.
  • For touchpad gestures on the keyboard attachment, use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad to customize taps, swipes, and multi-finger gestures.

Why it matters

The wrong posture setting causes real friction — icons and touch targets that are too small when you detach the keyboard, or a touch keyboard that keeps popping up while a physical keyboard is attached. Getting this configured once removes daily annoyance.

Best practices

  • Set posture switching to automatic if you frequently attach and detach a keyboard cover throughout the day.
  • Pin frequently used apps to the taskbar so they stay easy to tap when the layout shifts to touch-friendly spacing.
  • Test Snap layouts with touch after changing multitasking settings — some layouts are easier to trigger with a stylus than a finger.

Common problems and fixes

Touch keyboard doesn't appear when the keyboard cover is detached
Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch keyboard and make sure the keyboard cover isn't still being detected as connected — reseat the connector or restart the device.
Interface stays in desktop layout on tablet
Open Settings > System > Tablet and manually switch the posture setting, since some third-party hinge sensors don't always report correctly.

Tips and tricks

  • Swipe in from the right edge with a finger to open Quick Settings and Notification Center quickly without needing to reach the taskbar icons.

Frequently asked questions

Is 'Tablet Mode' from Windows 10 gone entirely?

Yes — Windows 11 replaced the dedicated Tablet Mode toggle with continuous, automatic adjustments, though you can still influence the behavior from the Tablet settings page.
