Talk to your R1 using the Push-to-Talk button
The R1's primary way of interacting with its AI assistant is the Push-to-Talk (PTT) side button — press and hold it to speak, then release to let the device respond.
What you should know
- Press and hold the PTT button on the side of the device while you speak your question or request.
- Release the button when you're done talking; the R1 processes your request and responds audibly and on its 2.88" touchscreen.
- For tasks on connected apps, the Large Action Model (LAM) can carry out multi-step actions based on what you say, using the accounts linked in Rabbit Hole.
- You can start a new request at any time by pressing PTT again, without waiting for the previous response to finish.
Why it matters
PTT is the core interaction model of the R1 — nearly everything the device does starts with a voice request captured through this button, so understanding how to use it well shapes your entire experience with the device.
Best practices
- Hold the button down for your entire request rather than tapping it, so the full question is captured.
- Speak naturally and wait for the response before pressing PTT again to avoid talking over the device.
Common problems and fixes
- R1 doesn't seem to hear the request
- Make sure the button is fully held down while speaking, not just tapped, and check that you're not covering the microphone area.
- Responses are cut off or delayed
- Confirm you have a stable Wi-Fi or data connection, since voice requests are processed online.
Tips and tricks
- Keep requests reasonably specific — the R1 tends to handle a clear, single request better than a long string of unrelated asks in one PTT press.
Frequently asked questions
Does the R1 listen all the time?
No — it's built around Push-to-Talk, meaning it only actively listens for a request while you're holding the PTT button down.
