Keep your console's system firmware current

Nintendo periodically releases system updates that patch security issues, improve stability, and are often required before a new game, amiibo feature, or online service will work at all.

What you should know

  • Go to System Settings > System > System Update to check for and install the latest firmware.
  • The console can also prompt for an update automatically whenever it connects to the internet.
  • Updates download over Wi-Fi only — Nintendo Switch has no wired Ethernet port without the official dock's LAN adapter or a USB-Ethernet adapter.
  • Some game cartridges and downloads include their own separate update prompt the first time you launch them, in addition to the system update.

Never power off the console or remove it from the dock while 'Updating system...' is on screen — interrupting an update can corrupt the system software and require a repair.

Why it matters

Online play, the Nintendo eShop, and Nintendo Switch Online features all require a reasonably current firmware version — falling too far behind can lock you out of multiplayer and store access until you update anyway, usually at a less convenient moment.

Best practices

  • Update over Wi-Fi while the console is docked and plugged in, since an update that loses power mid-install can be serious.
  • Check for updates before a big single-player release or online event so you're not stuck downloading at launch.
  • If a physical game prompts for its own update, let that finish separately from any pending system update.

Common problems and fixes

Update fails or gets stuck at a percentage
Restart the console by holding the Power button for 12 seconds, then retry the update with a stronger Wi-Fi signal or closer to the router.
'Unable to update system' error code appears
Confirm the date and time are correct under System Settings > System > Date and Time, since an incorrect clock can cause the update server connection to fail.

Tips and tricks

  • Leaving the console docked overnight lets it fetch and apply pending updates automatically the next time it's connected to the internet.
