Pair, re-sync, or recalibrate Joy-Con and Pro Controllers
Joy-Con controllers pair automatically when attached to the console's rails, but need to be manually re-synced over Bluetooth when detached, and occasionally recalibrated if stick drift or misregistered motion is noticed.
What you should know
- Sliding a Joy-Con onto the side of the console pairs and charges it automatically — no extra setup needed.
- To pair detached, go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pair Controller, then press the small sync button on the Joy-Con's rail.
- Recalibrate analog sticks under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks if the cursor or character drifts without input.
- Recalibrate motion controls under the same menu's Calibrate Motion Controls option, resting the controller on a flat, still surface.
- Up to eight Joy-Con or Pro Controllers can be paired to one console at a time for local multiplayer.
Stick drift that calibration doesn't fix is a hardware wear issue, not a settings issue — Nintendo offers a free repair program for confirmed Joy-Con drift.
Why it matters
Controller connection issues are one of the most common day-to-day annoyances, especially in tabletop and multiplayer setups, and most are solved by this same short re-pair or recalibration flow.
Best practices
- Keep Joy-Con firmware current — it updates automatically the first time a controller reconnects after a system update.
- Store Joy-Con attached to the console or a charging grip rather than left detached and idle, which drains their batteries.
- Recalibrate sticks periodically even without obvious drift, since minor calibration drift builds up gradually.
Common problems and fixes
- Joy-Con won't sync when detached
- Hold the sync button (next to the SL/SR buttons) for a few seconds until the player LEDs start flashing, then retry pairing from Controllers and Sensors.
- Stick drifts even after calibration
- This usually indicates worn analog stick hardware — request a repair through Nintendo Support rather than repeating calibration.
Tips and tricks
- Press the L and R buttons together (or ZL+ZR) on any paired controller from the Home Menu to instantly reassign which controller is 'Player 1'.
Frequently asked questions
Can Joy-Con be used on a PC or phone?
Not officially — Joy-Con are designed to pair with a Nintendo Switch console; third-party software support varies and isn't guaranteed by Nintendo.
Related settings
- Wireless / Wi-Fi ConnectionThe console connects to the internet exclusively over Wi-Fi unless the official dock is paired with a USB-Ethernet adapter, so a stable wireless connection is essential for updates, downloads, and online multiplayer.
- Sleep Mode & Power OptionsSleep Mode pauses the console in a low-power state so it resumes instantly, and its timing, along with a few charging-related power options, can be adjusted to balance convenience against battery wear.
