Set desktop pictures and dynamic wallpapers
Wallpaper settings let you choose a still image, Apple's dynamic or live wallpapers that change with time of day, or your own photo collection to display as the Desktop background, with independent options per display.
How to open Wallpaper
- Open System Settings → Wallpaper
- Browse Dynamic, Stills, or your own Photos albums
- Select an image or Dynamic Desktop set to apply it
- Adjust the fill option and Lock Screen pairing as desired
What you should know
- Built-in Dynamic Desktop wallpapers that shift appearance through the day
- Support for still images, including your own photos
- Option to show different wallpapers on each connected display
- Wallpaper can optionally sync with the Lock Screen picture
Why it matters
While largely a personalization feature, wallpaper choice also intersects with practical concerns like icon visibility and eye comfort during long work sessions, since a busy or high-contrast image can make desktop icons harder to read. Dynamic Desktop wallpapers add a subtle ambient cue tied to time of day, and independent per-display wallpaper support is especially useful for multi-monitor setups where each screen serves a different purpose.
Best practices
- Choose a lower-contrast image if you keep many icons visible directly on the Desktop
- Use different static wallpapers per display to help visually distinguish monitors in a multi-screen setup
- Pick a Dynamic Desktop wallpaper if you want subtle time-of-day variation without manual changes
- Keep wallpaper file sizes reasonable if selecting a very large custom photo, for smoother performance
Common problems and fixes
- Wallpaper looks stretched or blurry
- Choose a higher-resolution image, or adjust the fill option (Fill Screen, Fit to Screen, Stretch to Fill) to better match the display's native resolution.
- Wallpaper does not sync to the Lock Screen
- Check the wallpaper pairing option, since some custom wallpapers are not automatically linked to a matching Lock Screen.
- Dynamic wallpaper appears static
- Confirm 'Dynamic Desktop' is selected rather than a single still frame variant of that same image set.
Tips and tricks
- Use a subtle, single-tone wallpaper on a secondary monitor dedicated to reference material for less visual distraction.
- Right-click a photo in Photos and choose 'Set Desktop Picture' as a quick shortcut instead of browsing in settings.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a video as wallpaper?
No, standard Desktop wallpaper supports still and Dynamic Desktop images, not video; Screen Saver supports some motion content separately.
Will changing wallpaper affect Lock Screen widgets?
No, Lock Screen widgets are configured separately even if the wallpaper image is shared between Desktop and Lock Screen.
Can each display really have a different wallpaper?
Yes, when Displays have Separate Spaces enabled, each display can be assigned its own independent wallpaper.
