Connect to Wi-Fi and manage cellular or eSIM plans

Wi-Fi settings are the same across every iPad model; cellular and eSIM options only appear on Wi-Fi + Cellular models, where you can manage carrier data plans, roaming, and per-app cellular access without ever inserting a physical SIM.

What you should know

  • Open Settings → Wi-Fi to join a network, view its details (IP address, security type), or tap "Forget This Network" to remove a saved one.
  • On Wi-Fi + Cellular models, open Settings → Cellular Data to see data usage by app, toggle individual apps' access to cellular data, and turn "Data Roaming" on or off.
  • Tap "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan" under Settings → Cellular to activate a plan by scanning a QR code from your carrier or using their app — supported iPad Pro and iPad Air cellular models can hold multiple eSIM plans at once.
  • Enable "Allow Cellular Data Switching" if you use multiple plans, so the iPad can automatically use whichever has better signal or an active data plan.

Why it matters

Cellular data caps and roaming charges are real money — leaving Data Roaming on while traveling internationally, or leaving cellular access enabled for a large backup or video app, is one of the most common causes of an unexpectedly large carrier bill.

Best practices

  • Turn off Data Roaming before international travel unless your carrier plan explicitly includes it, then re-enable deliberately if needed.
  • Restrict cellular access for large apps (cloud backup, video streaming) individually under Settings → Cellular Data rather than disabling cellular entirely.
  • Keep a note of your eSIM QR code or activation record from your carrier in case you need to re-add the plan after a factory reset.

Common problems and fixes

iPad won't join a known Wi-Fi network
Tap "Forget This Network" under Settings → Wi-Fi and rejoin from scratch, or reset all network settings via Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset → Reset Network Settings if the issue affects every network.
eSIM activation fails or hangs
Confirm the iPad model and carrier both support eSIM, stay on a strong Wi-Fi connection during activation, and contact the carrier for a reissued QR code or activation link if it repeatedly fails.

Tips and tricks

  • The signal strength and network name in Control Center's Wi-Fi/Cellular card can be pressed and held for a shortcut straight into the relevant Settings pane.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Wi-Fi-only iPad ever use cellular data?

No — cellular hardware has to be built into the model at purchase; a Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot add cellular or eSIM capability later, though it can still get online via a personal hotspot from a phone.
