Adjust ringer, alert volume, and keyboard sounds
iPad's audio settings live under Settings → Sounds. Unlike iPhone, iPad has no Taptic Engine, so there's no system-wide haptic feedback toggle — feedback here is purely audible, covering ringtones, alert tones, and keyboard clicks.
What you should know
- Open Settings → Sounds (this screen is labeled "Sounds" on iPad, not "Sound & Haptics" — that combined name is specific to iPhone, which does have a Taptic Engine).
- Drag the "Ringtone and Alerts" slider to set volume, or enable "Change with Buttons" so the physical volume buttons control it directly.
- Tap "Ringtone" and "Text Tone" to choose or buy alert sounds for calls (via FaceTime/handoff from iPhone) and Messages.
- Toggle "Keyboard Clicks" on or off for audible feedback when typing on the on-screen keyboard.
- Toggle "Lock Sound" for the audible chime when the iPad locks.
iPad does not include a Taptic Engine, so there is no system haptic feedback for taps, notifications, or typing — any "haptic" toggle you may be looking for exists on iPhone, not iPad.
Why it matters
Because iPad relies on audio-only feedback, alert volume set too low (or Ringtone and Alerts accidentally unlinked from the physical buttons) is a common reason notifications feel like they're being missed even though they're arriving normally.
Best practices
- Enable "Change with Buttons" so the side volume buttons adjust alert volume the same way they adjust media volume — fewer surprises when you expect one slider to control both.
- Turn off Keyboard Clicks in shared or quiet environments (meetings, libraries) since it's a separate toggle from the master mute.
- If you rely on audible confirmation for typing accuracy, keep Keyboard Clicks on and pair it with a slightly higher Ringtone and Alerts volume.
Common problems and fixes
- No sound on notifications even though volume looks fine
- Check whether a Focus mode is active under Settings → Focus, and confirm the specific app's Sounds toggle is enabled under Settings → Notifications → [App].
- Volume buttons no longer change ringtone/alert volume
- Open Settings → Sounds and confirm "Change with Buttons" is enabled — when it's off, the physical buttons only affect media playback volume.
Tips and tricks
- Media volume and Ringtone/Alerts volume are separate on iPad — if a video or song plays silently while notifications still chime, you're adjusting the wrong slider.
Frequently asked questions
Does iPad have haptic feedback like iPhone?
No — iPad does not include a Taptic Engine, so there's no system-wide haptic feedback for taps, notifications, or the on-screen keyboard. This is a hardware difference from iPhone, not a setting that can be turned on.

- NotificationsEvery app's notification behavior — banners, sounds, badges, and where alerts show up — is configurable individually, and Focus modes let you silence everything except what you've explicitly allowed through, based on time, location, or what app you're in.
- Display & BrightnessBeyond the basic brightness slider, iPadOS gives you several display behaviors that adjust automatically — True Tone matches white balance to ambient light, Night Shift shifts colors warmer in the evening, and Auto-Lock controls how long the screen stays on before dimming.
