Set How Quickly the Screen Locks

Auto-Lock determines how long iPhone waits without any touch input before dimming and locking the screen, balancing convenience against battery life and security.

How to open Auto-Lock

  1. Open Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock
  2. Choose a duration from the list, or Never
  3. Enable Attention Aware Features under Face ID & Passcode if desired
  4. Test by leaving the screen idle to confirm the timing feels right

What you should know

  • Options typically range from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, plus Never
  • Interacts with Attention Aware Features, which can keep the screen on longer while you're looking at it
  • Locking triggers Face ID/Touch ID or passcode requirement for the next unlock, per Sign-In settings
  • Low Power Mode can influence default screen timeout behavior

Why it matters

Auto-Lock is a quiet but constant tradeoff between security, battery life, and convenience—too short and the screen locks mid-task annoyingly, too long and the device stays unlocked and visible longer than necessary, both draining battery and creating a privacy exposure window if left unattended. In shared or public spaces, a short Auto-Lock time reduces the chance of someone else viewing notifications or content on an unattended device. It's one of the simplest settings with an outsized effect on daily battery performance.

Best practices

  • Choose a shorter Auto-Lock time (30 seconds–1 minute) in public or shared environments for better privacy
  • Use Never only when the device is stationary and charging, such as during a presentation or as a kiosk
  • Combine with Attention Aware Features so the screen doesn't dim while actively reading
  • Reconsider a longer timeout if you find yourself frequently unlocking mid-task

Common problems and fixes

Screen locks too quickly while reading
Increase the Auto-Lock duration under Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, or enable Attention Aware Features
Auto-Lock option is grayed out
Check whether Low Power Mode or a Screen Time restriction is overriding the setting
Battery drains faster after changing Auto-Lock
A longer timeout keeps the display on more, increasing power use; shorten it if battery life matters more

Tips and tricks

  • Use a shorter Auto-Lock time paired with Face ID for a good balance of security and quick access
  • Check Screen Time > Always Allowed if Auto-Lock behaves unexpectedly during restricted hours

Frequently asked questions

Does Auto-Lock affect Face ID timing?

No, Face ID recognition speed is separate; Auto-Lock only controls when the screen dims and locks from inactivity.

Can Auto-Lock be set to Never?

Yes, though it's generally discouraged for battery and security reasons except in specific stationary use cases.

Does Attention Aware Features override Auto-Lock?

It can delay dimming while it detects you're looking at the screen, on supported Face ID models.
