Adjust ringtones, alert volume, and vibration intensity
Galaxy Watch sound and haptic settings control the volume of ringtones and alert sounds separately from vibration strength, and include a system-wide mute plus a dedicated "good vibrations only" style silent mode.
What you should know
- Open Settings → Sounds and vibration on the watch to set media/alert volume and overall vibration pattern intensity.
- Enable Vibrate then ring or Mute to change how incoming calls behave without adjusting every individual alert.
- Vibration pattern and strength can be tuned separately from volume — useful for people who want strong haptic feedback for workouts but a quiet or muted speaker.
- The watch's tiny speaker also handles Bixby/voice responses and media playback control (as a remote) — its volume is shared with alert volume by default.
Why it matters
Because a watch is worn against the skin, haptic strength has a much more direct, physical effect on daily comfort than a phone's vibration does — dialing this in prevents both missed alerts (too weak) and constant startling buzzes (too strong).
Best practices
- Increase vibration strength for workout and exercise notifications specifically, since motion and sweat reduce how noticeable a standard-strength buzz is.
- Use Mute rather than powering off the watch when you need total silence — Mute still allows Always On Display and health tracking to keep running.
- Test vibration pattern changes with a real incoming call or timer rather than just the preview, since perceived strength on skin differs from the settings-screen preview.
Common problems and fixes
- Watch vibrates but makes no sound for the same alert
- Check that media/alert volume isn't set to zero independently of vibration — the two sliders are separate, and the volume can be muted while vibration remains active.
- Vibration feels too weak to notice during exercise
- Raise vibration intensity in Settings → Sounds and vibration, and confirm the watch band is snug — a loose fit noticeably dampens how well haptics are felt.
Tips and tricks
- Press and hold the side button, then select the vibration icon in the resulting quick menu on some models for a one-tap mute toggle without opening Settings.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set a custom vibration pattern for specific contacts?
Some Samsung and third-party messaging/calling apps support custom vibration patterns per contact, configured within that app's own notification settings rather than the watch's global sound settings.

- NotificationsGalaxy Watch notifications mirror your phone's notifications by default, but which apps are allowed to reach the watch — and how they're displayed — is managed per-app through the Galaxy Wearable app, not the watch's own settings.
- Display & BrightnessGalaxy Watch display brightness can run on auto-brightness (using the ambient light sensor) or a fixed manual level, and pairs with separate controls for how the screen wakes and how long it stays lit.
