Set a watch lock, manage permissions, and enable Find My Watch
Galaxy Watch privacy and security settings cover the on-watch screen lock, per-app data permissions synced from the phone, and Samsung's Find My Watch/Find My Mobile network for locating a lost device.
What you should know
- Set a pattern or PIN under Settings → Security → Lock type — this is required for Samsung Wallet payments and recommended generally.
- Enable Auto lock and choose how quickly the watch locks after removal from your wrist (via the built-in skin-contact sensor) under the same menu.
- Manage per-app permissions (location, physical activity, notifications) from Galaxy Wearable → Watch apps → [app] → Permissions.
- Enable Find My Watch (under Samsung account/Find My Mobile settings) so a lost or stolen watch can be located, locked, or wiped remotely from findmymobile.samsung.com.
If you remove your watch and it stays off your wrist past the auto-lock timer, it locks automatically and requires the PIN/pattern again — this is intentional (it also disables payments) and not a bug.
Why it matters
Because a Galaxy Watch can carry payment cards and personal health data, and is far more likely to be lost or slip off a wrist than a phone is to be misplaced, security settings here carry outsized real-world consequences compared to how little attention they typically get during setup.
Best practices
- Enable the lock screen even if you don't use Samsung Wallet — it protects health and notification data from anyone who picks up a misplaced watch.
- Turn on Find My Watch immediately after setup, not after something goes missing — it can't help retroactively.
- Review per-app permissions in Galaxy Wearable periodically, the same way you would on the phone itself, since watch apps accumulate access over time.
Common problems and fixes
- Watch keeps asking for the PIN after every removal
- This is the intended behavior of Auto lock combined with the skin-contact sensor; if it's too frequent, adjust the Auto lock delay under Settings → Security rather than disabling the lock entirely.
- Find My Watch shows the watch as offline
- The watch needs an active Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular connection to report location; a watch that's powered off or completely out of range won't update until it reconnects.
Tips and tricks
- findmymobile.samsung.com works from any browser, not just the phone — useful if the paired phone itself is also lost or unavailable.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing the watch from my wrist log me out of everything?
It locks the screen and disables Samsung Wallet payments once the auto-lock timer elapses, but it doesn't sign you out of your Samsung account or unpair the watch.
Related settings
- Samsung Wallet & PaymentsSamsung Wallet on Galaxy Watch lets you add debit or credit cards for contactless NFC payments, plus store select transit passes and IDs where supported, all secured behind a watch lock and independent from the phone once cards are added.
- Backup & RestoreGalaxy Watch backs up its settings, watch faces, and app layout to your Samsung account automatically when paired, which lets a replacement or factory-reset watch restore most of its prior configuration during setup rather than starting from scratch.
