Pair, re-pair, or replace a Siri Remote

The Siri Remote connects to Apple TV over Bluetooth and normally pairs automatically the first time you bring it close to the box. If it stops responding or you're setting up a second remote, it can be re-paired manually.

What you should know

  • For first-time setup, hold the remote within a few inches of the Apple TV — it should pair and prompt on-screen automatically.
  • To re-pair manually, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth on the Apple TV, then hold down the Menu (or Back) and Volume Up buttons together for about 5 seconds until it appears in the list.
  • Select the remote in the Bluetooth device list and choose Connect.
  • Settings > Remotes and Devices also lets you adjust remote button behavior, such as swapping Menu/Home button actions.

Only one Siri Remote can be actively controlling a given Apple TV's on-screen focus at a time, though multiple remotes can stay paired for convenience.

Why it matters

A remote that won't respond is the single most common Apple TV support issue, and it's usually a Bluetooth pairing hiccup rather than a hardware fault — re-pairing takes under a minute and resolves the vast majority of cases.

Best practices

  • Keep the remote charged (USB-C on 2nd/3rd generation, Lightning on 1st generation) — a near-dead battery causes intermittent, laggy input before it dies completely.
  • If using an aftermarket remote or game controller alongside the Siri Remote, pair it from the same Bluetooth menu to avoid conflicts.

Common problems and fixes

Remote isn't found during pairing
Move within 2-3 feet of the Apple TV, remove other Bluetooth devices temporarily, and retry the Menu + Volume Up pairing sequence.
Remote works but buttons feel unresponsive
Charge it fully via USB-C for at least 30 minutes, then test again — many "broken" remotes are simply low on battery.
Lost the Siri Remote entirely
Use the free Apple TV Remote control in Control Center on a paired iPhone or iPad as a temporary replacement.

Tips and tricks

  • The Control Center Apple TV Remote on iPhone works over the same network without any Bluetooth pairing, making it a fast backup when the physical remote is misplaced or dead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an Xbox or PlayStation controller instead?

Yes — compatible Bluetooth game controllers can be paired from Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and used for supported games and some navigation.
