Sign in and manage the Apple ID that powers Apple TV

Your Apple ID on Apple TV syncs purchases, subscriptions, Family Sharing, iCloud Photos for the screen saver, and app data across your other Apple devices.

What you should know

  • Go to Settings > Users and Accounts to sign in, switch accounts, or add a family member as a separate profile.
  • Selecting your Apple ID here shows Family Sharing status, iCloud storage, and connected subscriptions like Apple Music and Apple TV+.
  • Enable iCloud Photos under Settings > Users and Accounts > [Your Apple ID] > iCloud Photos to use your own library as the screen saver source.
  • Use Settings > Users and Accounts > Add New User to give each family member their own watchlist, recommendations, and app data on a shared Apple TV.

Signing out of Apple TV removes downloaded app data tied to that account, though purchases and subscriptions remain tied to your Apple ID and redownload after signing back in.

Why it matters

The Apple ID signed in on Apple TV determines which purchases, subscriptions, and Family Sharing content are available — sign-in issues are one of the most common reasons the App Store or Apple TV+ shows the wrong or missing content.

Best practices

  • Set up separate user profiles for each family member so recommendations, watchlists, and Screen Time limits stay personal.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication on the Apple ID for better account security, since Apple TV purchases use stored payment methods.
  • Keep Family Sharing enabled so purchased apps and subscriptions are available to everyone in the household without repurchasing.

Common problems and fixes

Can't sign in — "Incorrect Apple ID or password"
Verify the password on iPhone or iCloud.com first (typing on the TV keyboard is error-prone), or use the "Sign In With Your Apple ID Password" option that sends a code to a trusted device.
Purchased apps or movies are missing
Confirm you're signed into the correct Apple ID under Settings > Users and Accounts, and that Family Sharing purchase sharing is turned on if it was bought by another family member.

Tips and tricks

  • Use the Apple TV Remote app or the Passwords app on iPhone to autofill your Apple ID and password via Bluetooth instead of typing on the on-screen keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

Can multiple people share one Apple TV with separate accounts?

Yes — add each person under Settings > Users and Accounts > Add New User so their app data, watchlists, and recommendations stay separate on the same device.
