Shrink the display to reach the top of the screen easily
One-Handed Mode temporarily shrinks and shifts the entire screen content down toward the bottom half of the display, making it possible to reach top corners and status bar elements with one thumb on large-screen phones.
How to open One-Handed Mode
- Open Settings
- Tap Display
- Select One-handed mode (naming may vary by manufacturer)
- Enable the feature and note the trigger gesture shown
- Perform the gesture from any screen to activate it
What you should know
- Triggered by a swipe-down gesture on the navigation bar or a dedicated shortcut
- Automatically reverts to full size after a short timeout or a tap outside the shrunk area
- Available on supported manufacturer skins and some stock Android versions
- Does not resize individual app content, only repositions the rendered display
Why it matters
As phone screens have grown larger, reaching the top corners or status bar with one thumb has become physically difficult for many users, particularly during one-handed situations like standing on transit or holding a bag in the other hand. One-Handed Mode addresses this directly without requiring a case, grip accessory, or permanently smaller display setting, activating only when needed.
Best practices
- Learn the specific trigger gesture for your device model, since it varies between manufacturers
- Use it situationally rather than expecting it to stay active, since it's designed to auto-revert quickly
- Combine with a shorter screen timeout if reachability, not just screen-on time, is the main concern
- Check manufacturer-specific settings menus if the feature isn't found under the standard Display menu
Common problems and fixes
- One-handed mode option isn't available
- Confirm the specific device and Android skin supports the feature, since it's not universal across all manufacturers
- Mode exits too quickly
- Check for a duration or timeout setting within one-handed mode's own options, if the device offers one
- Gesture doesn't trigger the mode reliably
- Practice the exact swipe motion required, since it can be easy to trigger a different navigation gesture instead
Tips and tricks
- Use it briefly to dismiss a notification or tap a top corner icon rather than trying to keep it active for extended use
- Check for an adjustable size or position setting on manufacturer skins that offer more customization
Frequently asked questions
Does one-handed mode work with gesture navigation and button navigation both?
Support varies by manufacturer; some require gesture navigation to be enabled for the shrink gesture to work.
Does it change app layouts?
No, it only shrinks and repositions the rendered screen; apps are not resized or restructured.
Is this the same as a reachability feature on other platforms?
It serves the same general purpose of easier one-handed reach, though implementation details differ by manufacturer.

- Do Not Disturb / Focus ModeDo Not Disturb silences calls, texts, and notifications while still letting you choose specific exceptions, like starred contacts or repeat callers. Android's broader Modes system extends this with presets like Bedtime and Driving, plus fully custom modes for work or focus time.
