Zoom in on the screen
Magnification lets low-vision users zoom into any part of the screen using a shortcut gesture or button, temporarily or persistently enlarging content system-wide, independent of any single app's own zoom controls.
How to open Magnification
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Magnification.
- Choose a shortcut, such as triple-tap the screen or tap the accessibility button.
- Turn on 'Magnify screen' and trigger the shortcut to test it.
- Adjust whether the keyboard and navigation bar are excluded from magnification.
What you should know
- Triple-tapping the screen (if enabled) toggles magnification on and off instantly.
- A floating magnification button can be added for one-tap access without a gesture.
- You can pan around the zoomed area by dragging with two fingers while magnified.
- Magnification can be excluded from the keyboard and navigation bar to keep typing usable.
Magnification zooms the whole screen rendering, which is different from an individual app's pinch-to-zoom on just its content.
Why it matters
For users with low vision who don't need a full screen reader, magnification offers an independent way to read small text and interact with fine UI elements without switching to TalkBack.
Best practices
- Set up the triple-tap shortcut for the fastest way to toggle magnification on and off.
- Use the floating button option instead if triple-tap accidentally triggers during normal use.
- Practice panning with two fingers while zoomed in, since dragging works differently than normal scrolling.
Common problems and fixes
- Triple-tapping accidentally zooms the screen during normal use.
- Switch the magnification trigger from triple-tap to the floating button in Accessibility settings to avoid accidental activation.
- The keyboard becomes hard to use while magnified.
- Enable the option to exclude the keyboard from magnification so typing stays at normal size even while the rest of the screen is zoomed.
Tips and tricks
- Use two fingers to pinch while already magnified to adjust the zoom level continuously, rather than toggling on and off repeatedly.
Frequently asked questions
Is magnification the same as increasing font size?
No, font size only enlarges text, while magnification zooms the entire screen image, including images, icons, and buttons.
Can I use magnification temporarily without leaving it on?
Yes, a triple-tap-and-hold gesture lets you zoom in only while your finger is down, returning to normal size when you lift it.
