Locate, play a sound on, or mark lost AirPods as missing

AirPods appear in the Find My app like any other Apple device, using the Find My network to report an approximate location even when they're out of Bluetooth range of your iPhone.

What you should know

  • Open the Find My app, go to the Devices tab, and select your AirPods to see their last known location and play a sound.
  • Separate location dots for the left AirPod, right AirPod, and case appear if they've become separated.
  • Mark as Lost sends a notification if the AirPods come back online and can display a message with your contact info to anyone who finds them.

Why it matters

Find My only works if it was enabled before the AirPods went missing — there's no way to retroactively locate a pair that was never set up in Find My, which makes this a setting worth confirming proactively rather than after the fact.

Best practices

  • Confirm Find My Network is turned on for your AirPods under the Find My app's device details, not just that Location Services is on generally.
  • Keep at least one Apple device signed into the same Apple ID nearby regularly — Find My relies on the broader Find My network of Apple devices to relay locations.

Common problems and fixes

AirPods show "No location found"
They're out of range of any device on the Find My network; the location updates automatically once a nearby Apple device detects them.
Play Sound doesn't produce audio
The AirPods must have some charge remaining and be out of the case — a fully dead AirPod can't play a sound.

Tips and tricks

  • If only the case is lost (with AirPods elsewhere), newer cases with a built-in speaker and U1 chip can still be located and made to play a sound independently.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone track me through my lost AirPods?

No — Find My locations are only visible to you (or people you've explicitly shared them with) via your Apple ID, and Marking as Lost only reveals a contact message you choose to share.
