Reassign what tapping, squeezing, or pressing your AirPods does
Depending on the model, AirPods use a double-tap, a stem squeeze, or a light tap to control playback, calls, Siri, and noise control — and every one of those actions can be reassigned to a different function.
How to open Customize Press & Squeeze Controls
- Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the info (i) button next to your AirPods.
- Tap the Left or Right AirPod and choose a new action from the list.
What you should know
- Configure per-AirPod (left/right independently) actions under Settings → Bluetooth → [your AirPods] → Left/Right AirPod.
- Available actions typically include Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track, Siri, and Noise Control mode cycling.
- AirPods Max additionally has a physical Digital Crown for volume and a separate Noise Control button.
Why it matters
Accidentally triggering Siri or skipping tracks every time you adjust an AirPod's fit is one of the most common day-to-day annoyances, and it's almost always fixable by reassigning or disabling that specific gesture rather than living with it.
Best practices
- Assign different actions to the left and right AirPod (for example, Siri on one, Play/Pause on the other) to avoid accidentally triggering the wrong one.
- If you frequently reposition your AirPods during workouts, consider setting one side's control to "Off" to prevent accidental triggers.
Common problems and fixes
- Siri activates constantly by accident
- Reassign the control currently mapped to Siri to Play/Pause or Off under the AirPod's control settings.
- Squeeze/tap doesn't register reliably
- Squeeze the flat force-sensor section of the stem itself (not the mesh speaker area), or clean the stem surface if it's damp or dirty.
Tips and tricks
- On models with a squeeze control, a single squeeze plays/pauses, double controls next track, triple controls previous track, and a press-and-hold cycles noise control — by default, before any customization.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn off all gesture controls entirely?
Not globally, but each side's action can individually be set to a function you're unlikely to trigger by accident, effectively neutralizing it.

- Automatic Ear DetectionBuilt-in sensors detect when an AirPod is in your ear versus set down or in the case, automatically pausing playback the moment you take one out and resuming when you put it back in.
