Share audio from one device with a second pair of AirPods or Beats

Audio Sharing lets a second pair of AirPods (or select Beats headphones) join the same audio stream from one iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, so two people can listen to the same song or video together.

What you should know

  • Bring the second pair's case near the playing device with the lid open to trigger the Audio Sharing prompt, or start it manually via Control Center's AirPlay/output menu.
  • Each pair of headphones gets independent volume control even though the audio source is shared.
  • Only one source device streams to both pairs at a time — this is different from each pair separately connecting to its own device.

Why it matters

Audio Sharing is easy to overlook because it's triggered by proximity rather than a settings toggle — knowing it exists saves awkwardly passing a single earbud back and forth on a flight or a shared commute.

Best practices

  • Start Audio Sharing from Control Center (tap the AirPlay icon while audio is playing, then "Share Audio") if the automatic case-proximity prompt doesn't appear.
  • Keep both pairs within roughly 30 feet of the source device — Audio Sharing uses direct Bluetooth, not internet streaming, so range is limited.

Common problems and fixes

Second pair won't get the Audio Sharing prompt
Make sure the source device's Bluetooth is on and open Control Center to start sharing manually via the AirPlay/output icon instead of relying on proximity detection.
Audio cuts out on one of the two paired pairs
Move both listeners closer to the source device — sharing to two pairs simultaneously is more sensitive to distance and interference than a single pair.

Tips and tricks

  • Audio Sharing works across brands within Apple's ecosystem — one AirPods pair and one compatible Beats pair can share the same stream together.

Frequently asked questions

Do both people need the same type of AirPods?

No — any two supported AirPods or Beats models can share audio together; they don't need to match.
