Free, no sign-up · online since 1971
Volunteers have been typing and proofreading out-of-copyright books since 1971, which makes this the oldest digital library in existence. Seventy thousand-odd titles download as plain text, EPUB or Kindle files with no payment, registration or reader app standing in the way.
The plain-text editions are the quiet advantage: they open in anything, survive any device change, and will still be readable long after whichever ereader you own stops being supported.
