AltF Flow recipe

Convert a list of titles to URL slugs

To make slugs for many titles at once, put one title per line and convert each line to a slug. This recipe trims lines, removes blanks, then turns each title into lowercase words joined by hyphens, with accents stripped and & written as and. A final dedupe step stops two similar titles from producing the same slug twice.

What the slug step does to each title

  • Removes accents, so Crème Brûlée becomes creme-brulee.
  • Replaces & with the word and.
  • Turns every run of other characters, including apostrophes, colons and brackets, into a single hyphen.
  • Lowercases the result and trims hyphens from both ends.

Why dedupe after slugifying

Two titles that differ only in case or punctuation produce the same slug, which would clash as URLs. Running Remove duplicate lines after the slug step shows how many unique slugs you really have. If you need to keep every row aligned with its title, remove the dedupe step and fix collisions by hand.

Titles to URL slugs: questions and answers

Does it remove stop words like a, the or for?

No. Every word is kept. Add Remove words or characters before the slug step if you want to drop specific words.

What happens to non-Latin scripts?

The slug step keeps only a-z and 0-9, so titles written entirely in other scripts produce empty lines.

Can I build full URLs?

Yes. Add Add prefix / suffix with a prefix such as https://example.com/blog/.
