About this ranking
Why does a quiet show like The Wire outrank flashier prestige hits?
Writing and plotting carry 30% of the score, and few shows plot with The Wire’s density. Flash fades on rewatch; structural ambition does not.
How is a miniseries like Chernobyl scored against a seven-season show?
On the same criteria, with no runtime penalty or bonus. A five-episode series that never wastes a scene can outscore a show that took seven seasons to produce the same number of great episodes.
Does a weak final season sink an otherwise great show?
It costs points under consistency, which is 20% of the score, but it cannot erase what came before. House of Cards drops for exactly this reason without falling off the list.
How often is this list updated?
Quarterly. New seasons and finales can move a show meaningfully; the top ten has stayed stable for several editions, but the 15–20 range shifts as new prestige drama debuts.
