Measure your visual processing speed and cognitive efficiency with a symbol-to-digit substitution task modelled on clinical tests.
Brain Processing Speed Test is a 60-second symbol-digit substitution task: nine symbols are paired with the digits 1 to 9 in a legend that stays on screen, symbols appear one at a time, and you press the matching number key as fast as you can. Your score is the number of correct substitutions in the minute, reported alongside error count and accuracy (correct presses ÷ total presses) and plotted against four bands — below 30, 30–44, 45–59 and 60 or more. It is a self-administered speed measure for curiosity, self-comparison and tracking your own day-to-day variation, not a clinical assessment.

Read the Instructions card and study the Symbol-to-Number Key, which pairs nine symbols with the digits 1-9, then press Start Test (60 seconds).
A symbol fills the box on its own. Press the matching number key 1-9, or tap the row of digit buttons underneath, as fast as you can: the frame flashes green for a correct answer and red for a wrong one, the legend strip highlights the pair, and the bar shows the seconds remaining next to your running correct count.
When the 60 seconds run out you get Processing Speed: Below Average, Average, Above Average or Elite, with Items Processed, Errors and Accuracy cards, a Score Benchmark chart placing you against 25, 38, 52 and 65, and a Retake Test button.
The symbol-to-digit key is on screen the whole time and highlights the current pairing, so the task measures substitution speed rather than how well you memorised nine symbols.
Correct answers, errors and accuracy percentage are reported separately, which exposes the common pattern of racing through and pressing wrong keys.
Every run is exactly the same length, so scores are directly comparable between attempts without any adjustment.
In this one-minute version, roughly 30 to 45 correct substitutions is the middle band, 45 to 59 sits above it, and 60 or more is the top band. These are the tool's own thresholds for self-comparison, not clinical norms — real norms depend on age, education and the specific validated test being used.
One point per correct key press within the 60 seconds; wrong presses count as errors and do not subtract from the correct total. Accuracy is shown separately as correct presses divided by all presses, so a fast run with many mistakes and a slower accurate run look different in the results.
No. It is modelled on the same symbol-to-digit substitution idea but it is not a validated or standardised instrument, has no age-adjusted norms, and is not administered under controlled conditions. A low score here means nothing diagnostic on its own.
Not on the basis of this test — scores swing widely with sleep, caffeine, screen size, keyboard familiarity and simple practice effects, and any single run is noisy.
