The largest swings this quarter, up or down
This list tracks the largest rank swings of the quarter in either direction, and roughly half of it is falling rather than rising — a sharp decline is exactly as newsworthy as a sharp rise, and this list refuses to only cover good news. Each entry states plainly whether it moved up or down and why, rather than burying a decline in vague language. Some of these swings will hold for years; others are likely to reverse by the next update, and the note on each entry says which looks more probable.
The top three
DeepSeek · open-weight models · 2023
An open-weight model that matches GPT-4-class reasoning on many benchmarks at a fraction of the API cost, which is why it forced every major lab to cut prices within weeks of release.
Humane · wearable AI device, launched April 2024 — assets acquired by HP, 2025
A screenless, voice-and-projection wearable meant to reduce phone dependence, the AI Pin shipped to overwhelmingly negative reviews citing overheating, sluggish response times and a subscription fee on top of an already high device price; Humane sold its core assets to HP roughly a year after launch.
Swedish EV battery maker · filed for bankruptcy, November 2024
Once positioned as Europe’s best hope for a homegrown battery-manufacturing champion and backed by billions from investors including Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs, Northvolt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after production delays and quality problems it was never able to fully resolve.

Artificial intelligence · Founded 2021
Anthropic was founded explicitly by researchers who left OpenAI over safety disagreements, and that origin story still shapes hiring — the company screens hard for people who want the safety mission, not just the compensation.
Iceland · recurring volcanic eruptions since December 2023
A series of volcanic eruptions near Grindavík has repeatedly forced evacuations and closed the nearby Blue Lagoon spa multiple times since late 2023, and the ongoing seismic activity has made this stretch of Iceland’s tourism industry one of the more disrupted travel stories of the past two years.
Suno · music generation · 2023
Full songs with structure, not just a loop — verses that build into a chorus that actually resolves. The lyrics are the weakest layer; the composition and vocal performance are not.
Connected fitness equipment and subscription company
Peloton’s pandemic-era boom gave way to a prolonged demand hangover, multiple rounds of layoffs and a revolving door of leadership, though the most recent quarters show the decline stabilising rather than continuing to steepen — a smaller, steadier business rather than the growth story it once was.
How this list is scored
Movement is tracked as signed rank change on each entry’s home category list; a large negative number is treated with exactly the same editorial weight as a large positive one, not downplayed.
Questions
A collapse is exactly as significant a move as a breakout success, and this list would be a worse editorial product if it only tracked good news. Northvolt’s bankruptcy is as much a "biggest mover" as BYD’s growth.
Against precedent. A bankruptcy filing is treated as durable; a single bad product cycle or a weather-driven disruption is treated as more likely to reverse.
Rarely by design. An entry that has already made its big move typically drops off in favour of the next quarter’s sharpest swings, up or down.
Weekly. "This quarter" in the title refers to the comparison window each rank change is measured against, not the update frequency.
