The BOGO formula

For an offer of buy X, get Y at P% off on items of the same price, the real discount on a full set is:

discount = (Y × P%) ÷ (X + Y)

So BOGO free is (1 × 100%) ÷ 2 = 50%, BOGO 50% off is (1 × 50%) ÷ 2 = 25%, and buy 2 get 1 free is (1 × 100%) ÷ 3 = 33.3%. Items that do not complete a set pay full price, and with mixed prices the cheaper item is the discounted one.

Calculator FAQ

How do I use the BOGO calculator?

Choose the offer (BOGO free, BOGO 50%, buy 2 get 1 and so on, or build a custom one), enter the price per item and how many you are buying. The calculator shows what you pay, what you save, the real percentage off and the price per item.

What if the items have different prices?

Use 'Mixed prices'. The calculator sorts items from most to least expensive, groups them into sets and discounts the cheapest item in each set, which is the equal-or-lesser-value rule most US stores use.

What does 'You'll use' do?

It shows what each item you actually need costs. If you buy two to get one free but only need one, you paid full price for the one you use, and the calculator says so.

What is the single-item half-price option?

Some supermarkets ring up a single BOGO free item at half price. Tick the box to price an odd item that way. Check the store's policy, because most stores charge full price for one item.

Can I share a calculation?

Yes. The page address updates as you type; use 'Copy link to this calculation' to share exactly what you see.

Is that BOGO really a deal?

Put in the price and the offer. See what you pay per item, what you save, and whether a plain coupon would beat it.
