What each free tier actually allows

Whether you need to pay at all depends on where the free plan's ceiling sits. Here it is in each vendor's own terms.

  • Free OCR (text recognition) is limited to a maximum of 10 recognised pages per the Terms of Use
  • Free API use is capped at 25 file conversions within a 24-hour period per the Terms of Use
  • Ad-free pages are listed as a paid-plan feature, so free users see ads
  • Uploaded input files are deleted instantly after conversion; output files are deleted after 24 hours (or immediately if you click 'X')

What the free Video Converter does not do

A comparison that cannot say what its own tool gives up is an advert.

  • The converter engine is a download of about 31 MB from a public CDN (unpkg) on first use, and conversion runs single-threaded, so it is far slower than a hosted converter.
  • Video formats only. CloudConvert and Convertio also convert documents, images, ebooks, archives and more in the same place, and both have an API; we have neither.
  • No H.265/HEVC, AV1 or ProRes output, and no batch conversion of several files at once.
  • Large or high-resolution files are bounded by your device's memory; a server-side converter is not.

What the free Video Converter does

  • Converts to MP4, MOV and MKV (H.264 + AAC), WebM (VP9 or VP8), animated GIF, or audio-only MP3, M4A and WAV
  • Optional trim by start and end time, resolution and frame-rate changes, mute, and a fast stream-copy remux when the codec can stay as it is
  • Runs FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside the tab; the video is not uploaded

No. Nothing here needs signing in. CloudConvert needs a free account for its 10 daily credits; Convertio's free tier is usable without one, though its help centre and Terms of Use disagree about the exact limits.
